Every Great Dream Begins With a Dreamer

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.
– Harriet Tubman

A college friend once passed on these words to me through a surprise note in my campus mailbox. The note was meant to encourage me through a stressful time, and the sentiment was genuine, unexpected, and received in full appreciation. Ironically, we actually no longer speak due to a falling out a month before graduation. She may never know the impact these words had on me past that particular trying time, but I consider her message as one of the lasting legacies of our friendship and one of the most important things she ever gave me.

Finals can be a hugely stressful time. My Labor and Employment final is tomorrow, Business Associations on Wednesday, and my International Trade paper due on Saturday. I always say of every semester that it goes by so quickly, and now at the culmination of a semester of classes, readings, and a ton of time in the library this is all too true again. I often say of the law school lifestyle, "the days are long, but the weeks are short."

Finding the last bit of motivation can come from surprising places. Whenever I start to feel myself burning out under the pressure and stress, I remind myself that no matter how unpredictable an exam question may be, how difficult the curve may be, or how fierce my competition is, ultimately, I can really only look to myself, not any extraneous influences, to achieve my goals. And we all have the strength, the patience, and the passion to do just that for those really important things we set out as our dreams.

So, remember, there's nothing wrong with being a dreamer... so long as you make sure to chase that dream.
